GLOBE sun photometer

DIY sensor for monitoring airborne qualitative concentrations of PM2.5

Customer link and technical handbooks

Category

DIY sensors

Environmental matrix

Air

Parameters analysed

PM2.5 (aerosols)

Detection limits

Qualitative sensor.

Sensor functionalities

Students point a sun photometer at the sun, and record the highest voltage reading that they obtain on a digital voltmeter connected to the photometer.

Measure the aerosol optical thickness of the atmosphere (how much of the sun’s light is scattered or absorbed by particles suspended in the air).

The values of AOT are calculated automatically when data are entered through GLOBE data entry page.

Costs

n.a.

Advantages

Ai part of open data set available to scientists, and supporting students of all ages in doing real scientific research through the GLOBE Program.

Limitations

  • Qualitative instruments
  • It requires 15-20 minutes/daily

Applicability

To measure the aerosol optical thickness of the atmosphere (how much of the sun’s light is scattered or absorbed by particles suspended in the air).
