    Definition of actionable knowledge in citizen science

    Actionable knowledge refers to insights and information generated through scientific research that create the conditions for positive change. Unlike knowledge that remains abstract or confined within academic circles, actionable knowledge is the translation of collected data into usable information: information that can be mobilized in public debate, awareness campaigns, decision-making, and community empowerment. Its defining value lies in its capacity to affect change and respond to societal needs.

    Within Citizen Science (CS), actionable knowledge plays a particularly crucial role. As Irwin (1995) argued, a democratized approach to science should engage with citizens’ concerns and yield tangible benefits for communities, the environment, and society as a whole. In this sense, actionable knowledge ensures that CS is not only about participation in research but also about producing practical outcomes that matter in real-world contexts.

    The study of actionable knowledge is often described as a form of meta-research, as it examines the processes, practices, and pathways through which knowledge informs action (Arnott et al., 2020). This perspective highlights that actionable knowledge is not limited to its effects, but also involves understanding how knowledge systems themselves can act as drivers of change. Producing actionable knowledge requires acknowledging the complexity of knowledge creation, where theory and practice intersect in dynamic and sometimes contested ways.

    In essence, actionable knowledge in Citizen Science bridges the gap between scientific research and real-world application, ensuring that citizen contributions generate meaningful, credible, and usable insights. It allows science to translate into practical benefits, supporting empowerment, informed decision-making, and the potential for broader social and structural change.
